The Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot File

We’ve all heard about “stolen valor” stories where people pretend to be military veterans, or they embellish their military record in an effort to gain something (e.g. more respect, veteran discounts, a free adult beverage). But what one member of the media has done just might blow all of those cases right out of the water.

According to Stars & Stripes, and later admitted by the broadcaster himself, Brian Williams has been fibbing about an event that supposedly took place nearly 12 years ago during the war in Iraq. It seems he has claimed — repeatedly — to have been in a helicopter that was forced down by RPG fire.

RPGs — rocket-propelled grenades — are serious business, particularly to helicopters. If one was in an aircraft hit by an RPG, he or she would know it immediately, and would probably have some kind of scar to show for it.

Dan Rather was taken down by propagating fiction, although he was making it up about someone else. You have to wonder if Williams’ career can survive such a stunning blow to his credibility.
