Branstad orders flags to fly at half-staff Tuesday in honor of fallen officer

Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff Tuesday, May 26, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in honor of Omaha, Neb., Police Officer Kerrie Orozco, 29, who was a Walnut, Iowa, native and resident of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Orozco was killed in the line of duty Wednesday, May 20, 2015, while attempting to arrest Marcus D. Wheeler on a felony warrant for first-degree assault.

The governor’s directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under control of the State of Iowa.

Flags will be at half-staff on the state Capitol building and on flag displays in the Capitol complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
