At least one Republican is aiming to end Democrat state Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell’s service in the Iowa House of Representatives in the 2016 General Election. Sondra Childs-Smith announced Tuesday that she will be seeking election in House District 45, which is made up of southern Ames and Grant, Milford and Washington townships in Story County.

Childs-Smith was born and raised in Arlington, TX, before moving to Ames to attend Iowa State University on a track scholarship. In Ames, she met and married her husband Dennis P Smith. Childs-Smith has worked for The Lorch Company and was the National Sales Manager for Three Ladies by Roxanne. Currently, she is the Vice President of her family farming operation.

Childs-Smith has a long history of community service and is now looking to work on behalf of Iowans in the House.

“The people, small business and farms are what make our community and state truly great,” said Childs-Smith. “ I will work to find ways to make it easier to be an employer, draw in new jobs to Ames, and ensure our workers have the skills that they need to succeed. I will go to Des Moines and stand up for our community, businesses, farms and university. Currently a conservative fiscally responsible person has no voice in our District. I will give the voters of District 45 a clear choice between the far left, free spending representation they have now and a chance to have their conservative views represented.”

Childs-Smith has served on the Ames Sports Commission, volunteered as a youth sports coach and also for the Iowa Games. She is a proud Air Force Mom — her son is an F-16 fighter pilot — and her daughter is a junior trader at the Irish Stock Exchange in Dublin, Ireland, and plays in the Basketball Ireland Women’s Premier League. Childs-Smith and her husband also have one grandson.
